A collaboration between Submit2gravity and Exeter Artspace created the opportunity for selected 36x artists from London and the South West. 'Transition' launched in the ancient Norman surroundings of Exeter Castle and then toured to the four storey building of the Bargehouse on London’s South Bank.
Simon Ruscoe 'Frustration Becomes Fury' (Galvanised Steel)
Multi media artwork was showcased in the prison cells
of Exeter Castle and within the labyrinthine of intertwining rooms of
the Bargehouse. When entering the rustic ambience of the Bargehouse
and within the grand arena of Exeter Castle, you encounter intriguing
sounds along with visual and interactive installations.
The
darken attic space of the Bargehouse lends itself to the triplet of
rotating mesh figures 'Unidentified Suspects' by artist Isaac Cordial.
UV lights directed on the mesh figures casts beautifully delicate
ghostly shadows within the arched recesses of the wall.
Genetic Moos installation named 'Mother', after the Greek God Echidna - 'Mother of all monsters', pulsates and reveals deeper levels of organic activity. 'Mother' is aware of your presence and responds to your sound. Her inner organs evokes celestial worlds and microscopic sea creatures.

The cell space was the ideal location for artist George Lazenbleeps' interactive sound installation 'Machine'. He utilises resonates and interference from the surrounding environment, along with electronic sound generators, springs and found objects for the viewer play to create unique sounds and ultimately become part of the machine.

The clanking and repetitive sound can be heard from Cheryl Field's kinetic sculpture 'Taenia Solium', within the basement of Exeter Castle. Placed within the cell the mechanical spinal arm with a stone attached to the end casts a reflection on the ceiling from a light placed directly above the mirrored sculpture.
Exeter Castle and the Bargehouse provided the unique backdrops to house artwork crossing traditional with new media. Live and people participation performances, digital media, ceramics, painting, photography, drawing, digital technology occupy the many rooms and adorn the walls.
Both curators have carefully selected artwork which emphasis the way in which art can be engaging, playful and dynamic to make your experience of visiting the 'Transition' memorable.
